The parts of Wales most affected by Japanese knotweed are in the south, specifically in the valleys, Fishguard and the north-west coast. But what do these Japanese knotweed hotspots mean for home and landowners in Wales?

Japanese knotweed in Welsh towns and villages

Japanese knotweed in Wales

Although Japanese knotweed has spread across the whole of the UK, Wales seems to be especially hard hit. But why is this?  Well, it has something to do with its initial introduction to Wales, many years ago.   Though it was first introduced to London in the 1850's, it soon arrived in Wales and was put to good use (at the time).  In fact, Japanese knotweed was used to stabilize the soil in the coat-mining valleys and also to line the railways.  Unfortunately, any Japanese knotweed clippings were thrown into rivers and streams, and thus this invasive plant got spread itself further afield.

Which areas are most affected?

It is clear to see how Japanese knotweed rooted itself firmly in Wales because it was allowed to spread freely and thrive via the soil, waterways, and along train lines.

Even today, the majority of our Japanese knotweed removal jobs are located in residential gardens in the valleys, next to Network Rail tracks and properties that back onto rivers and streams. Increased flooding in Wales is also to blame for the continuing rise in Japanese knotweed cases.

Reporting and removing Japanese knotweed in Wales

There is no legal requirements for you to report a Japanese knotweed infestation to the Welsh authorities. However, you are encouraged to report it (see details at Gov.wales for more information).

You may also wish to seek help from your local council if someone has allowed Japanese knotweed to spread onto your land. And, if you do have an infestation, here's what you need to do next.

  • Firstly, speak to a Japanese knotweed removal company in Wales who will be able to easily identify the plant.
  • Secondly, don't ignore the infestation or try to remove the plant yourself. Often, this causes more harm than good as you will inadvertently allow the weed to spread even further. Even the tiniest particle of rhizome can grow to an immense size in a short period of time, given the right conditions.
  • Thirdly, hire an expert to eradicate Japanese knotweed once and for all.

Professional knotweed removal companies like TCM will ensure swift, legally correct and complete removal, or treatment of Japanese knotweed from your garden, or land. Contact TCM Cardiff to discuss your Japanese knotweed concerns today.
