What is Marestail?
Marestail (Erigeron canadensis), often known as the “Bottle Brush” plant, is a fast growing and invasive deep rooted weed, not easily eradicated. It spreads rapidly forming a dense carpet that can crowd out less vigorous plants.
The rhizomes can be seen as far deep as 7m and the plant enters a property either through the wind distribution of spores, or more commonly, from the underground spread from a neighbouring property.
Why is Marestail a problem in the UK and Ireland?
Just like Japanese knotweed, Marestail will grow from the smallest amount of retained rhizome. This invasive weed can push through tarmac and grow through voids in concrete.
